She was a kind donkey, though sometimes a little mischievous. She liked the gentle things in life, gingernut biscuits, ginger biscuits, and the smell of gingernut biscuits baking.

On Christmas Eve, Dizzy went for a potter. The snow crunched politely under her hooves, and the world felt hushed, as if it didn’t want to wake anyone.

That’s when she saw the ghost.

It wasn’t a scary ghost. It was small, pale and glowing softly in the winter breeze. It hovered near an old gate, looking very sad.

“Oh,” said Dizzy. “Hello. I’m Dizzy!”

“Hello,” said the ghost, sounding relieved. “I’m so glad you can see me.”

The ghost explained that it only appeared once a year, on Christmas Eve, and only to kind-hearted creatures. Long ago, it had been forgotten, and now it wandered, hoping someone would notice.

Dizzy didn’t quite understand how a ghost could be forgotten, but it felt like a very sad thing indeed.

“You look like you need a gingernut biscuit,” Dizzy said, which was a bit silly as the ghost was see-through, but it seemed the right thing to say.

So Dizzy stayed with the little ghost. They watched the snow fall. They listened to the quiet. Dizzy shared her warmth, and the ghost shared its story, though some of it drifted away like mist.

When the church bell rang in the distance, marking Christmas Day, the ghost smiled.

“Thank you,” it said. “I won’t be lonely this year.”

And with that, it faded, leaving the night just a little warmer than before.

Dizzy stood for a while, then wandered home, her heart feeling full in a way she couldn’t quite explain.

On Christmas morning, Dizzy woke to find the old gate mended, the snow sparkling brighter than ever, and a small silver bell tied gently around her neck.

It jingled softly when she moved.

Dizzy didn’t tell anyone about the ghost.

But every Christmas Eve after that, she went for a little potter with some gingernut biscuits, just in case someone else needed to be seen.

Happy Holidays!
