Today, I am going to write something slightly unusual, but I think it is important. Regardless of where you live, I am sure everyone is aware that the United States Government has been shut down for X days. Both sides of the political aisle are blaming the other for the shutdown, and no matter who you believe, it is completely ridiculous and unacceptable. It has been said that millions of innocent United States citizens are going to lose their health insurance benefits, which can and will be catastrophic for their lives. I am not naive enough to believe that any politician cares enough about the lives of human beings to stand up for these people and fight for everyone to have health insurance.

The United States is the ONLY fully developed country that does not offer free healthcare to everyone, which is very upsetting because the United States is one of the wealthiest countries. I firmly believe that healthcare and insurance are a human right. Healthcare should not be viewed as a special privilege for the chosen few. This post is my letter to the United States government and will be highly emotional and frustrating.
Dear United States Government,

I am one of the people in this country living in fear due to the reckless way healthcare is being treated. I have lived with an illness that does not have a cure for more than half of my life. For a better quality of life living with Multiple Sclerosis, I rely heavily on a specific medication that slows the progression, but due to the carelessness of whoever makes decisions regarding health insurance and proper healthcare, the payment for this medication has skyrocketed. Why should anyone have to choose between taking care of their health and being able to afford other necessities in life?

People from all walks of life are struggling and suffering in fear right now because our government is playing games with the opposite party. Grown adults elected to office to ensure the same people who voted them into their position are taken care of, but continue to fail those people. Too many people are going hungry and trying to survive, but they are unable to because of our government. How do any of the powerful and wealthy people failing to manage the country sleep at night with so many others struggling? Why are healthcare and insurance not offered to everyone, as they are in every other developed country? Why should anyone have to choose between medications that are keeping them alive and food on their tables and a roof over their heads?

While the government remains shut down and the politicians seem to be on an extended vacation, most citizens in the United States are feeling the negative effects. Food banks that helped to feed the hungry are running out of funds and food, yet the politicians in the government can find money from their wealthy friends to get millions of dollars to pay the military, who they are trying to turn on other Americans. The fact that the US government has continued to send our troops to American cities is shameful and illegal. The brave men and women in the military should not be forced to evade on American soil.

Another enormous issue the American people are facing is a tremendous decline in the US economy. Many people out of work are struggling to find employment, but many companies are not hiring. Unfortunately, the unemployment rate continues to fall, and there does not appear to be an end in sight. With the government shutdown, many people have been furloughed or fired. I am an educated person with a college degree, but unfortunately, it has been difficult to find employment.

Of course, as many of you know, I finally applied for disability, which was extremely difficult for me to do. I never wanted to lean on or depend on anything within the government to afford the things I need in life, but unfortunately, that is where life has taken me. I have received a letter from them requesting additional information. As much as it would help me to get disability, I still have a strong desire to work and earn a living. At this moment, I am playing the waiting game to hear back regarding my disability application. Of course, as I try to remain logical, I am not getting my hopes up that this will work out the way that it should.

I would send a letter like this to the government, but I know it would not produce real change. Most politicians seem more invested in maintaining their power than addressing the needs of ordinary citizens. While many Americans struggle, government officials appear disconnected from these hardships. Because of this disconnect, I have never felt engaged by politics, as it seems the system restricts ordinary people’s choices unless they have immense wealth. Once considered a land of freedom, I now view our freedoms as largely illusory.

I am the same as every other American citizen, patiently waiting for the government to do the right thing and reopen. Again, I am logical and have seen the shameful way our government behaves, so I am not overly optimistic that things will work for the greater good. I was discussing the government shutdown and the massive increase in healthcare premiums with my mother the other day. Unfortunately, she is a supporter of the current president, but she can see the harm being done to every American. Considering she is a supporter of the current president, I told her the reason for the insane increase in healthcare premiums is 100% the fault of our government because it avoids a major disagreement; however, I mostly blame this issue on the current president ONLY.

Thank you for visiting my site and reading my letter to the United States Government. My intention with this post is to share my frustrations and fears about the current situation in America, which I believe many readers may relate to. While I wrote this letter as a form of expression and do not plan to send it to the government, I hope it encourages reflection and discussion. I welcome all viewpoints and invite you to share your thoughts in the comments. I will respond as promptly as possible. Please never forget I am always sending you LOTS of love
, comfort, support, and MANY positive vibes
!

Always, Alyssa
