We all know that having MS is a risk factor for unemployment, but likewise UK University life has increasingly become a risk factor for the academic.
The Times Higher Educational Supplement reports redunancies of about 30,000 staff over the past three years with 13,000 getting the boot or asking to be kicked out just last year. There is more to come. There is also non replacement as people leave
Sadly education has become a business and the rot was started in England when University fees and the idea that 50% of the population should be off to University arose. Kids are leaving with massive debt and an uncertain future prospect.
All this activity means more work for fewer staff and less time to do research…less time to find thing to benefit humans, less time for UK PLC to invent the treatments of tomorrow. Is UK academia a good career path…It can be but it has become a more difficult hill to climb.
