Epstein-Barr Virus Transformed B Cells From Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and Multiple Sclerosis Patients Differ in EBV Lytic and Latency Marker Expression. Immun Inflamm Dis. 2026;14:e70411.
The Great and the Good have been telling us that molecular mimicry between EBV and a target in Lupus and MS occurs suggesting a similar causal pathway but this study suggests that the two EBV targets are different. In MS it associates with latency which occurs in B cells to hide EBV from the immune system and in Lupus it is lytic EBV that associates with Lupus. When the virus lyses B cells it pops them open so the virus escapes the cell and can be infective. The data concerning differences between healthly controls and MS were not that convincing compared to differences with controls and lupus.
I am not sure of the rules but there must be differences as we dont have MS one week and Lupus the next….I suspect some of this difference is due to immune recognition genes in humans But I dont know why, AI can make up a story if you want
